The New York Giants are facing a crucial decision regarding their roster as the 2023 NFL offseason approaches. Among the most pressing matters are two key players whose contracts are set to expire this year.
As the deadline nears, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is shedding light on the latest developments concerning Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones. Rapoport recently discussed on NFL GameDay the Giants’ intention to retain both players, acknowledging that they have been instrumental in the team’s playoff aspirations.
According to Rapoport, these two players have “earned the right” to continue with the Giants beyond 2023. Although specific contract details are still unclear, it’s expected that multi-year agreements will be negotiated.
If long-term deals for both players don’t materialize, Rapoport mentions that the Giants could use the franchise tag on one of them.
The team’s situation with Jones has become more complicated since they declined his fifth-year option in April 2022. Had they exercised it, the Giants would only have needed to address Barkley’s contract.
However, they were hesitant to extend Jones based on his earlier performances. While Jones has shown improvement this season, he still has not been as impressive as in previous years.
While Barkley’s return seems a foregone conclusion, the Giants’ interest in keeping Jones has come as a surprise to many.
