Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, has emerged as a leading candidate for head coaching positions this offseason, a status he held last year as well.
Reports indicate he was on track to become the head coach of the Washington Commanders at that time. Insider Lake Lewis Jr. revealed that Johnson preferred former Commanders quarterback Sam Howell as the starter, while general manager Adam Peters aimed to draft a new quarterback.

As a result, both parties seem to have found a suitable resolution by choosing to part ways.
Currently, the Commanders are gearing up to face Johnson and the Lions in the divisional round following an impressive inaugural season led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn.
Johnson’s reputation as an offensive strategist in Detroit strongly suggests he will soon secure a head coaching position.
This season, the Lions excelled, finishing first in total offense, second in passing offense, and sixth in rushing offense.
Additionally, they were one of the few teams to commit fewer than 15 turnovers.
Johnson played a crucial role in reviving Jared Goff’s career, transforming him back into a franchise quarterback after a period of struggles.
Once Detroit’s season concludes, Johnson will likely attract major interest from various teams seeking a new head coach.
The developments appear to have benefited both Johnson and the Commanders.
