Tom Thibodeau has guided the New York Knicks to obvious improvement in recent years. Although Thibodeau often seems to be under pressure heading into each new season, he has managed to keep his position while bringing playoff basketball back to New York.
Despite his recent success, some believe his time with the Knicks may be limited, including sports analyst Stephen A. Smith. Smith suggests that, if the Knicks decide to part ways with Thibodeau in the future, they should target Tyronn Lue.
He clarified that he’s not advocating for Thibodeau’s immediate dismissal but feels that it may be time for a change to improve the team’s long-term prospects. Lue, whom Smith considers one of the top two coaches in the NBA, would be an ideal candidate.
Smith also pointed out that Lue could be eager to leave the Los Angeles Clippers for a team with a more reliable roster, taking a jab at the Clippers’ star players, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, for their injury concerns.
Additionally, Smith highlighted that Lue is 19 years younger than Thibodeau, making him a potential long-term leader for the Knicks. This would be a strategic move for the franchise looking ahead.
Of course, this scenario hinges on the Knicks being willing to make such a change, and it’s unlikely to happen before the end of the season unless both Lue and Thibodeau’s situations drastically change.
For now, it remains a hopeful possibility, but the Knicks’ front office would be wise to keep Lue in mind should the opportunity arise.
