Elon Musk is shifting Tesla Inc.’s focus away from its traditional car business toward humanoid robots that are still under development and not yet generating revenue. The company’s CEO believes that around 80 percent of Tesla’s value will come from the Optimus robot initiative, which he first introduced four years ago.
Tesla released its latest “master plan” on Monday, a document Musk updates frequently, and it highlighted the company’s robot efforts for the first time.
Musk described the plan as a step toward “bringing AI into the physical world,” noting that the company has spent nearly twenty years building the foundations for technological growth through electric vehicles, energy products, and humanoid robots.
The original Tesla master plan, published by Musk in 2006, laid out a path the company largely followed: start with an electric sports car and use the proceeds to fund the creation of increasingly affordable vehicles.
However, Musk admitted that the second plan from 2016, which aimed to launch electric semi trucks, buses, self-driving technology, and an autonomous vehicle service, has not yet been fully realized. He also criticized the third plan issued in 2023 as being too complicated for most people to understand.

Progress and Uncertainty
The newest plan is shorter than previous ones, at under 1,000 words, but it does not offer many concrete details. Musk has been similarly uncertain about when Optimus will be ready for commercial deployment, stating in January that his “very rough guess” was the second half of 2026 for deliveries to other companies.
Despite this uncertainty, Musk continues to highlight Optimus as a major growth opportunity for Tesla.
Car Sales Decline
While emphasizing its robot business, Tesla’s traditional car business has shown signs of slowing. Worldwide vehicle deliveries fell 13 percent in the first half of the year, putting the company on track for a second consecutive annual decline.
Musk’s statements suggest that he sees Optimus as the future driver of Tesla’s value, even as the electric vehicle side experiences a slowdown.
