The Democrats' presence in the Capitol on Friday holds considerable importance due to the narrow Republican majority.

Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has announced that she is heading back to Washington after recently undergoing hip replacement surgery in Germany, which followed a fall in Luxembourg last month.

In a video shared on the social platform X, she expressed, “I am on my way to Washington to proudly represent the people of San Francisco in Congress. I’m honored to do so to share our San Francisco values. Thank you for giving me that honor.”

House Democrats brace for pivotal Speaker vote as Pelosi returns (Alamy)

At 84 years old, Pelosi was part of a delegation of 17 lawmakers who traveled to Luxembourg last month to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The veteran California representative sustained an injury from a fall during the trip and was subsequently hospitalized in Luxembourg.

Following her hospitalization, she was moved to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where her spokesperson reported that she underwent a “successful” surgery.

This update from Pelosi arrives as House Democrats are expected to gather at the Capitol on Friday to participate in the vote for selecting the next Speaker of the House, as indicated by the Democratic whip’s office.

The Democrats’ presence in the Capitol on Friday holds considerable importance due to the narrow Republican majority, with some GOP members expressing reluctance to support Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in retaining his position in the 119th Congress this year.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has stated that he will not support Johnson on Friday, which means that if one more Republican votes against him, Johnson could lose the Speakership, assuming all Democrats vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

If one Democratic representative is absent, Johnson could afford to lose two votes within his party while still securing the Speakership.
