On Monday, Kevin O’Leary, a star of the hit show “Shark Tank,” expressed that the idea of merging the U.S. and Canada into a single nation is quite intriguing. During an appearance on “The Hill” on NewsNation, O’Leary, a Canadian citizen, mentioned a recent trip to Palm Beach where discussions about Canada took place.
He acknowledged Trump’s tendency to make outrageous statements, emphasizing that while his policy discussions often happen via social media, they generate considerable activity.
In his conversation with host Blake Burman, O’Leary elaborated on some compelling concepts related to this idea. He pointed out the possibility of forming an economic union, noting that Canadians are reluctant to surrender their sovereignty.
However, he reiterated Trump’s sentiment about becoming “more powerful,” stating that economic success equates to power in today’s climate. O’Leary’s comments came after President-elect Trump proposed the merger following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation.
Trump suggested on Truth Social that if Canada were to merge with the U.S., it would eliminate tariffs, also reduce taxes, and ensure safety from the persistent threats posed by Russian and Chinese ships in Canadian waters.
Last month, Trump also mentioned that many Canadians desire to see Canada become the 51st state, questioning the rationale behind the U.S. subsidizing Canada with over $100 million annually. He stated, “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense!”
Recently, Trump has criticized Trudeau, referring to him as the “governor” of Canada following their meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Trudeau’s resignation came shortly after Trump pledged to impose new tariffs on Canadian imports, which he claimed would be rescinded if the two nations merged.
Trump has also indicated interest in potentially including territories like the Panama Canal and Greenland as part of the U.S. O’Leary advised Burman that he had recommended to Trump that “the Canadians that have come down … Justin Trudeau, and then a few ministers, I would argue to you that you’re wasting your time with them.” The Hill has sought comments from Trudeau’s office regarding these developments.
