Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received high praise from President Biden, who highlighted the numerous challenges they addressed together and expressed pride in their personal friendship.
Reflecting on his collaboration with Trudeau, Biden noted during a Tuesday morning statement that Canada remains one of America’s closest allies. “When I last visited Ottawa, I emphasized that the United States chooses Canada as a key partner because no nation offers a stronger alliance, a closer partnership, or a more reliable friendship.
The same is true of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,” Biden stated. As Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, Biden recalled that Trudeau was the first international leader he spoke to after taking office in 2021.
The president shared his gratitude for Trudeau’s support and cooperation over the years, describing their partnership as integral in addressing major global and regional issues.
Biden outlined their joint efforts, which ranged from tackling the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing climate challenges to combating fentanyl’s devastating impact. He also mentioned their united stance with Ukraine against Russian aggression, defending shared values like freedom.
Additionally, Biden credited their leadership with fostering generational investments that revitalized economies and established North America as a powerhouse of economic competitiveness.
Trudeau’s resignation comes months before Canada’s upcoming general election, with the ruling Liberal Party seeing diminishing public support. Meanwhile, President-elect Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if border security measures are not intensified, particularly in curbing fentanyl trafficking.
On Tuesday, Biden lauded Trudeau for his leadership qualities, describing him as a leader with “commitment, optimism, and strategic vision.” He further emphasized that Trudeau’s tenure made both nations safer and strengthened their alliance.
Biden concluded by affirming his appreciation for Trudeau’s leadership and friendship, stating, “The world is better because of him, and I will always value the partnership we shared.”
