The New York Giants’ 2022 season exceeded many expectations across the NFL. Not only did they secure a playoff spot, but they also went on to win a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. Strong performances from Daniel Jones and Coach of the Year Brian Daboll played a key role in their success.
As they look ahead to 2023, the Giants are focused on further improving their offense, recently hiring Chris Smith as their new offensive line coach, according to On3 Sports.
Smith joins the Giants from Holy Cross, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 2022. Under his leadership, Holy Cross ranked as the eighth-best team in the FCS for scoring and finished with an impressive 12-1 record.
Although Smith lacks NFL coaching experience, his background in offensive coaching could provide valuable insight into strengthening the Giants’ offensive line.
Last season, Daniel Jones was the fifth-most sacked quarterback in the league, with 44 sacks, highlighting the need for improvement in protecting their quarterback. While Jones is known for his ability to make plays with his legs, being sacked over 40 times points to issues in the offensive line.
If Smith can improve the line’s performance, Jones would greatly benefit, as would the Giants’ running game. The offense still has areas to address, particularly the wide receiver position, which many view as a key growth area for the team.
With the NFC East remaining a competitive division, especially with the strong Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants will need to continue evolving their roster to meet the challenges ahead.
