Tears were hard to hold back after witnessing Doechii’s heartfelt acceptance speech at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
The rapper from Tampa made history on Sunday at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, becoming only the third woman ever to receive the Best Rap Album honor for her acclaimed mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal.
This victory carried even more weight as Cardi B, the last female artist to win in the category, presented her with the award. Before them, Lauryn Hill was the first woman to claim the title, securing the win in 1999 for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Wearing a custom Thom Browne ensemble, Doechii accepted one of the evening’s earliest awards, a fitting tribute to the designer who has championed her as an emerging force in hip-hop.
During her speech, Doechii kept it brief but powerful, reflecting on the rarity of women winning this category. “I don’t wanna make this long, but this category was introduced in 1989, and only two women have won—Lauryn Hill—wait, three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii!” she said.
“I poured everything into this mixtape—I went through so much, committed myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded. He promised to show me just how good life can be.”
She went on to deliver an uplifting message for those watching, especially young women and her fans. “I know there’s some Black girl—so many Black women—watching me right now.
And I wanna tell you, you can do it,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you.”
