Dominic Smith’s new chapter with the Washington Nationals comes after signing a one-year, $2 million contract, which he views as a “fresh start.” The Nationals, who have finished last in the NL East for three consecutive years, have expressed a strong desire for Smith to take on the role of their everyday first baseman.
“They want me to come in, play first base, and share my knowledge of the game,” Smith explained during a video call with reporters on Wednesday when the deal was made official.
The terms of the contract include not only the $2 million salary but also up to $2 million in potential incentives, according to a source familiar with the agreement, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the full details weren’t made public.
While playing for the New York Mets, Smith was used in various roles, including first base, left field, and designated hitter. However, he believes focusing primarily on his natural first base position, a role he was often blocked from due to Pete Alonso’s presence, will allow him to find more comfort in his game.
Smith hopes this stability will lead to a better mindset at the plate. “It will help me have a clear head at the plate,” he shared.
Smith had a breakout season in 2020, posting a career-high .316 batting average and a .993 OPS, but his performance has declined since. Last season, he struggled to a career-low .194 with no home runs and just 17 RBIs across 58 games.
The 2013 first-round draft pick was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse after batting .186 in 101 plate appearances through May, but was recalled after three weeks in the minors.
He later spent time on the injured list due to a sprained ankle, and after being activated, was optioned back to Syracuse for the remainder of the season. The Mets finally chose not to offer him a contract for 2023.
Reflecting on his struggles, Smith emphasized the importance of better plate discipline this season: “Just continuing to control the strike zone and not chase. I’m at my best when I let the pitchers come to me.”
Over six seasons with the Mets, Smith has posted a .246 batting average and a .733 OPS, hitting 46 home runs and driving in 179 RBIs. The Nationals, coming off a dismal 2022 season, also made other roster moves on Wednesday, including designating right-hander A.J.
Alexy for assignment. Additionally, infielder Michael Chavis and left-handers Anthony Banda and Francisco Perez were signed to minor league contracts and invited to spring training.
