Victor Wembanyama entered the NBA with the rare distinction of being a highly anticipated superstar before even playing a game. Having already impressed on the international stage, he was selected as the No. 1 overall pick, signaling the beginning of a new era for the San Antonio Spurs.
Despite the immense hype surrounding his arrival, Wembanyama has faced challenges in immediately altering the Spurs’ fortunes. As of the 2023-24 season, the team holds a 3-14 record, showing that success has not come as quickly as expected.
Wembanyama’s individual performances, however, have been outstanding. He leads the Spurs in scoring with 19.2 points per game, along with 9.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.6 blocks, and 1.3 steals, displaying his all-around impact on the floor.
Although his impressive stats haven’t translated to team victories, former Spurs guard Patty Mills remains optimistic about Wembanyama’s future. In an interview with Hector Ledesma of ClutchPoints, Mills expressed confidence in the young player’s ability to help lead the Spurs back to championship contention.
It’s evident that Wembanyama will need additional support if the team is to progress, leaving the question open of whether the Spurs’ front office will seek to trade for talent or continue focusing on building through the draft.
