Heading into the 2023 season, Jordan Love is set to take over as the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. This marks the end of the Aaron Rodgers era, opening the door for Love to establish himself as the future face of the franchise.
Despite the change at quarterback, Love’s fifth-year option remains unsigned, a topic recently addressed by Packers GM Brian Gutekunst. “It’s a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t played,” Gutekunst remarked, referring to the over $20 million price tag for the option, which would take effect in 2024.
This figure is tied to Love’s first-round draft status, leaving the Packers with a huge decision ahead. Following his initial comments, Gutekunst clarified, “At the same time, obviously we’re moving forward with him.” These remarks suggest that signing Love’s fifth-year option is not a question of if, but when.
With Love now officially at the helm, the Packers have taken steps to build an offense around him. In the second round of the draft, they selected tight end Luke Musgrave and wide receiver Jayden Reed.
Musgrave, one of the draft’s most imposing tight ends, is expected to become a valuable asset if he performs to expectations, potentially offering the Packers a legitimate playmaker at the position. Reed’s selection, though somewhat surprising given other options available, signals a change in the Packers’ typical draft strategy.
Known for selecting larger receivers, they opted for the 5-foot-11 Reed instead. As the season comes to play, the key question will be whether Love can successfully lead the Packers’ offense in his first year as the starting quarterback.
