Dwight Freeney, who earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and graduated from Syracuse, has now been appointed to Syracuse University’s football staff to work in player development. The university made this announcement on Friday.
Between 1998 and 2001, Freeney played as a defensive end at Syracuse, where he recorded 34 career sacks. He entered the NFL in 2002 as a first-round draft choice by the Indianapolis Colts and went on to play for 16 seasons, establishing himself as one of the best pass rushers the game has ever seen.

Freeney became a Hall of Fame inductee in 2024, marking a milestone in his football journey. That same year, Syracuse honored him by retiring his No. 54 jersey, further celebrating his contributions to the program.
Freeney’s Goals and Availability
According to Freeney, the present moment feels like the right time to return to Syracuse in a new role. He expressed his thoughts through a statement, mentioning that the school already has strong momentum.
He believes his presence can help maintain that progress and push the team beyond its current level. With his schedule now more flexible than it has been in past years, he said he is ready to assist in any capacity that may be required.
The Syracuse football team closed last season with a 10-3 record, which came under the leadership of new head coach Fran Brown during his debut year.
