On Monday, a cargo vessel from Russia sank in the Mediterranean Sea, leaving two of its 16 crew members unaccounted for, as reported by the country’s officials.
An explosion in the engine room caused the ship to submerge near Spain, but 14 crew members were rescued and brought to a Spanish port.
Russian authorities identified the ship as the Ursa Major, which was carrying 380-ton freight cranes intended for a state project aimed at enhancing port infrastructure. Oboronlogistika, the company overseeing the vessel, stated that its intended destination was the city of Vladivostok.
Contrary to this, Kyiv intelligence suggested the ship was en route to Syria on a mission to retrieve Russian weapons following the departure of Bashar al-Assad from his leadership role after rebel forces seized control of Damascus.
