Reports on Friday revealed that Derek Carr, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, has picked up a shoulder injury that might threaten his availability for the 2025 season.
The Saints are meant to begin their offseason workouts on Monday, but with this injury, Carr might not be part of the early training sessions as the team begins its new phase with coach Kellen Moore.
Carr has been out of action since Week 14 of the 2024 season, when he sustained multiple fractures in the hand he does not throw with, during a game against the New York Giants.

He ended up missing seven matches last season because of injuries to both his oblique and hand, which led the Saints to turn to Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener to take over his role temporarily.
Carr previously had a problem with his shoulder back in 2023. At that time, he suffered a sprained AC joint during the early part of the season, although he managed to keep playing without sitting out any games.
Contract Status and Team’s Current Options
Although Carr’s contract still has two years left from the deal he signed in 2023, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that earlier in the offseason Carr had shown interest in checking the free agent market. Instead of letting him go, the Saints chose to restructure his deal, which keeps him with the team through the 2025 season.
As it stands, the Saints have the ninth pick in the NFL draft coming up this month. Their quarterback group includes Carr, Haener, Rattler and Ben DiNucci. If they decide to bring in another player at that position, they currently have about $27 million in available salary cap space.
