Andre Cisco is now set to join the New York Jets after reaching a one-year agreement worth $10 million on Monday.
His arrival comes at a time when the Jets are in urgent need of help in their secondary unit. Out of the top four safeties who played last season, three are now without contracts.
Cisco is expected to claim one of the starting roles, most likely playing beside Tony Adams, who received a restricted free agent tender that gives the Jets the right to match any competing offer worth $3.2 million.
Jets Rebuild Secondary With Fresh Additions
With Aaron Glenn stepping into his new role as head coach, attention immediately turned to improving the defensive backfield. Glenn, who previously worked as a secondary coach and had a playing career as a cornerback, made strengthening that group his opening move in free agency.
Alongside Cisco, the team also struck a deal with Brandon Stephens, a cornerback who played for the Baltimore Ravens. He is expected to take the place of D.J. Reed, who has now joined the Detroit Lions.
Cisco entered the NFL in 2021 when the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the third round as the 65th total pick. He came into the league after playing college football at Syracuse.
From that time until now, he has appeared in 63 games and started in 47 of them. During that span, he made eight interceptions, broke up 24 passes, forced three fumbles, and scored once from an interception return.
Struggles and Comments in Jacksonville
The 2024 season presented challenges for Cisco, as defensive coverage issues saw him benched during Weeks 13 and 14. However, he later returned to the starting group in Weeks 15 and 16. He was unable to play the final game of the season after injuring his groin during warmups.
He also drew attention for his remarks following a tough loss in Week 6. After the Jaguars were defeated 35-16 by the Chicago Bears in London, Cisco told reporters he noticed “a lot of quit” from some of his teammates during that game.
