Political commentator Van Jones recently expressed his thoughts on President-elect Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st state, suggesting that if this were to happen, Canada would likely become a “huge blue state.” He shared his views during a segment on CNN’s “NewsNight,” stating, “I don’t understand why anybody is mad at Trump about this.”
With a serious tone, Jones elaborated, “If Trump wants Canada to become the 51st … that would be a huge blue state.” His assertion seemed to resonate with conservative commentator Scott Jennings, who indicated he would reconsider his earlier remarks on the topic.
Jones, who has experience as an adviser to former President Obama, remarked, “I don’t think that Trump has thought this through. First of all, it would be wonderful to have a massive blue state.” He praised Canada’s health care system, adding, “It would be wonderful for us to—listen, if he—if Canada wants to come here and rescue us, I am more than happy.”
Earlier in the day, Trump had suggested merging the U.S. and Canada into a single nation, coinciding with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation and the end of his nine-year tenure in 2025. Trump claimed that such a merger would eliminate tariffs.
On Truth Social, he stated, “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
Last year, Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods unless the country enhanced border security and addressed the influx of fentanyl into the U.S. Trudeau responded that such tariffs would complicate collaboration between the two nations.
Following their late November meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the president-elect mocked Trudeau by referring to him as the “governor” of Canada. Canada is expected to hold a general election later this year.
